Artist Statement

I create paintings and ceramics in an effort to explore beauty as it relates to human culture, education, and general understanding. I feel that art is an amazing tool to describe the world around us and how it functions, particularly when it comes to investigating the intangible and mysterious entities that are rarely explored through conventional scientific research. It is also an amazing tool for creating, communicating and documenting culture. My work aims to explore these ideas through the representation of alternative modes of thought (at least in the context of popular culture) that ultimately document and evoke a changing world consciousness.

I am deeply interested in sacred stories, history, and art as practiced and expressed by multiple cultures with multiple perspectives. I feel that within these multiple perspectives exists a connected message or similar concept about how to live, and provides humans a way to investigate and accept the human condition. Addressing this is the central philosophy that drives my work. What I create is the product of this investigation. I approach art as a storyteller, and in doing so, aim to expose people to seemingly unconventional ideas in seemingly conventional ways. The work strives to encourage social progress through avenues of education, art, and agriculture that validate indigenous perspectives, and celebrate transcultural exchanges, to create sustained and balanced relationships with our environment and with each other.

BIO

Zane White is a multimedia artist living in Albuquerque, New Mexico who creates oil paintings and functional ceramics. Sacred stories and social histories from many cultures inspire a confluence of traditional, indigenous, and modern world perspectives on metaphysical philosophy that become art. Elements of landscape (particularly of the Southwest) become altered with a blend of surrealism, still life, geometric patterns, and abstraction creating a synthesis that describes the world as an arena for transcendental experience. Celebrating the distinctly unique alongside the traditional. His work explores images and objects, in a literary and narrative sense, as catalysts for alternative modes of thinking (at least in the context of popular culture) that ultimately evoke a changing world consciousness.
His three dimensional ceramic work is primarily functional wheel thrown vessels. He has trained in various vessel-making techniques from differing cultural backgrounds and different aesthetic sensibilities. These include American and Japanese techniques for stoneware, a traditional Japanese porcelain method from the town of Arita, and a hand dug, hand built, and pit fired method used by traditional potters from Ohkay Owingeh, New Mexico. He has 5 years of work related experience in ceramic educational institutions and has participated in many community organizations for ceramic arts. He has recently participated in two community Anagama wood firings and has helped renovate a community studio with new kilns and working spaces.
He Graduated Summa Cum Laude With a BFA from UNM in 2010 and continued his education for 4 subsequent semesters at Santa Fe Community College. His work has been featured in many local, regional, national, and international Juried shows and competitions. He has had solo Exhibitions at John Sommers Gallery and Winnings Coffe Co. Gallery and has been featured in many local galleries such as; the Weyrich Gallery, The 5G Gallery, The Arts Alliance Gallery, The SFCC Visual Arts Gallery, The Las Cruces Museum of Art, and The John Sommers Gallery. His work is currently being exhibited at the Old Schoolhouse Gallery in Cedar Crest, New Mexico and the Picture Cultural Art Foundation Gallery located on CSU campus in Los Angeles, California. He is currently working on a new series of painted works for scheduled group exhibitions in June and July 2013 including a 3 man exhibition entitled “Ground Effect” at the Kimo Theater Gallery curated by Augustine Romero and the City of Albuquerque.
